Shop-Vac 5.5 HP Wet/Dry Vacuum Review
I recently picked up a Shop-Vac 5.5 HP Wet/Dry Vacuum for my workshop, and I wanted something that could handle the gravel, dust, and debris that standard home vacuums just can’t manage. After testing it thoroughly, here’s my honest review.
Initial Impressions & Box Opening
The unit comes in a tall, sturdy box that reflects its 16-gallon capacity. It’s well-built and taller than most 5-gallon units, which I prefer for workshop cleanup. Assembly is simple: attach the casters, handle, and hose, and it’s ready to go.
Features I Liked
- Large 16-gallon tank for fewer trips to empty debris
- Powerful suction – motor draws ~10 amps, which translates to well over 1 HP
- Includes 2.5-inch hose and wide 7-ft hose for fewer clogs
- Attachment holders and storage integrated into the design

Performance
I put the vacuum through its paces on gravel, screws, and workshop dust. It handled everything effortlessly. Rocks and small debris were picked up immediately, and the vacuum never slowed down or clogged. Its suction is excellent for both floor cleanup and workshop maintenance.
Minor Drawbacks
- No included crevice tool for tight spaces or cars (but one can be used from another vacuum or 3D-printed)
- Claims of 5.5 HP are exaggerated; realistically, the motor is closer to 1–1.5 HP
Verdict
Overall, this Shop-Vac is a solid buy for anyone needing serious workshop cleaning. Its large tank, powerful suction, and sturdy construction make it a reliable choice. The only real improvement would be adding a crevice tool. Even without it, I rate this vacuum 4.5–5 out of 5, and at under $100, it’s an excellent value.
